Identity
The month of Kislev is the third month in the Hebrew calendar that starts with Tishrei, and the ninth month in the Tanakh calendar that starts with Nisan.
The name of the month “Kislev”, arrives – like the other months – from the Babylonian exile, and its meaning is “grease” or “fat” (probably because it is a month ‘full’ of rains).
The prominent event of this month:
- On the 25th of Kislev, the Temple and the altar in the Second Temple were rededicated after the defeat of the Greek army by the Maccabees, and since then, we celebrate for eight days the holiday of Hanukkah to commemorate the victory of the Hasmoneans and to remember the miracle of the small oil jug that lasted to light the Menorah of the Temple for eight days.
