Tammuz, in the Hebrew calendar, is the name of the tenth month from the beginning of the year, which starts with Tishrei, and the fourth month in the biblical year, which begins with the month of Nissan.
Events of the month:
- The Seventeenth of Tammuz – a fast day that marks the day when the walls of Jerusalem were breached before the destruction of the Second Temple.
- The first part of ‘The Three Weeks’ – the days that begin after the Seventeenth of Tammuz until the ninth day of the following month, the month of Av (a period also called “Bein HaMetzarim”).
During these days, mourning customs are observed due to the destruction of the Temple.
