Introduction
In many communities, it is customary to arrange on the evening before the seventh day of Shiva, a meal in honor of the deceased, which will include words of Torah and blessings for the elevation of his soul.
- If the end of Shiva falls on Shabbat, the meal should be moved to Thursday evening.
Getting up from ‘Shiva’
On the morning of the seventh day, shortly after you started your seventh day of mourning, sit on the low chair on which you sat in recent days for the purpose of the short ‘ceremony’ that concludes the ‘Shiva’ days.
- Someone from the people present in your house who are not sitting Shiva with you should say words of comfort to you, followed by the words “rise from your mourning” (if several family members are sitting together, they should say “rise from your mourning”).
- From this moment on, you stop all the rules that applied to you during ShivAnswer You are allowed to change your clothes, bathe, and wear leather shoes.
- On this day, you should visit the grave of the deceased and recite Psalms that are said during every visit to the grave (as appears on page 123), it is recommended to organize ten men so that the mourners can say Kaddish.
- When Shiva ends on Shabbat, you should rise from ‘Shiva’ on Friday, a few hours before Shabbat in order to prepare for Shabbat. And only visit the grave on Sunday.
