Types of Buildings
When passing by a mezuzah, whether entering or exiting, it’s good to touch it in order to remember and internalize the words of faith contained within it.
To be required to have a mezuzah, the building must be a ‘permanent structure’ and not temporary, like a sukkah or a temporary tent.
- A warehouse that is only used for storage and entered infrequently.
- Shelters – if they are intended solely for refuge – are exempt from a mezuzah, but if they have an additional use – they are obligated.
- Staircases – entrances to them require a mezuzah if they have a doorway.
- A warehouse that is frequently entered, such as a barn, requires a mezuzah. A small warehouse less than 2×2 meters is exempt.
Rented House
When renting a house, it is preferable to install mezuzot from the first day you move into the rented house.
Moving apartments? You must leave mezuzot in the house where you lived despite needing mezuzot for the new house. Invested a lot in the old mezuzot? You can take them with you and install simple, cheap but kosher and checked mezuzot in the old house. If a non-Jew moves into the house after you – the mezuzot should be removed as he is not obligated.
Business, Shop
All of the above also applies to a business, factory, and the like.
The owner must ensure the presence of mezuzot at the entrances to the offices and rooms throughout his business.
